Saskatoon’s francophone chanteuse Alexis Normand is joining forces with Alberta artist Ariane Mahrÿke Lemire for a double album release. The tour is called We Ain’t Cowgirls and will cover Western Canada in the next few weeks. Normand is releasing her self titled sophomore album. Lemire is releasing Je deviens le loup. Normand says this release is a far more personal, introspective work than any music she’s recorded before. Tickets are $15 – $20.

Where does the play end and real life begin? Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre’s latest show In Care opens this week. This is a brand new play by Kenneth T. Williams that takes a hard look at the child welfare system in Canada. It follows the story of Janice Fisher, a woman desperate to get her kids back from foster care. The play is the first act and then immediately following a short break with tea and bannock, the audience will be part of a panel discussion on the system and how we can make it better. This is an amazing community experience. Tickets are $12 – $15.

Capitol Music Club

The Tragicallly Hip’s frontman Gord Downie may be terminally ill but he’s not slowing down creatively. The artist is continuing to produce music with a message. Downie’s latest project is called The Secret Path it’s a short film and graphic novel about Chanie Wenjack, a young boy who died in 1966 while trying to run away from residential school. A special screening and public talk is being held on Sunday at the Capitol Music Club. It is free to the public and donations are being collected for the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund.

The folks at Wide Open Children’s Theatre are at it again this time with stories about threes. Your favourite puppets will keep the kids happy with tales like The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. All shows are 45mins and there’s tons of audience participation. Tickets are $10 – $15.

Looking for Love       Now – Nov. 2

Persephone Theatre

Persephone Theatre is partnering with a Spontaneous Theatre creation to bring it’s smash play Blind Date to the Saskatoon stage. This is a show that combines clowning, improvisation and comedy. There’s even an element of audience participation as the main character Mimi plucks audience members right out of the audience to date. The New York Times called this piece “Fearless, and very funny”. Tickets are $33-$47.
