The Prairie Ukrainian Film Festival (PUFF) is back with a weekend full of films about the Ukrainian experience. It kicks off with Horizons of Belonging a documentary following immigrant families as they rebuild their lives in Canada after fleeing the war. There’s something for everyone including the kids. The festival is free with donations accepted.

Take a trip to the Big Apple for an evening of laughs as the Saskatoon Soaps present its season finale Start Spreading the News. The improv group will bring a little Toon Town to NYC as it takes suggestions from the audience and twists them around with theatre games. Tickets are $16.

An evening of spoken word, poetry and visual arts is on tap for Friday night at the Remai Arts Centre. Persephone Theatre and the Saskatoon Open Door Society have paied up to host THREADS at Pesephone: Newcomers Navigating Creativity in Canada. This is an exploration of creativity and the realities facing newcomers to our city. There will be speakers and beautiful art on display. This event is free.

If you love vocal harmonies, you’re going to want to check out the Petit-Tones. The trio of Paulina Salisbury, Emma Gillingham, and Sanjana Brijlall will be performing jazz standards and other classic tunes. The group will welcome other local musicians including Keegan Isaac. Tickets are $15 – $20.

Get ready to laugh Canada! CBC’s The Debaters is coming to our city for a taping of the show in front of a live studio audience. As they say on the show, you can decide who’s the winner as they present a combination of fact and funny. There are two shows to choose from 2:00pm & 7:00pm. Tickets are $45 – $49.

After big tour stops in Northern Saskatchewan and Regina (till Sunday), Sum Theatre’s Theatre in the Park is back in Saskatoon outdoor theatre adventure with The Colour of the Town. This is the 14th season for this live professional performance the whole family can enjoy together with stops in neighbourhood parks throughout Saskatchewan. This year’s play was collectively created from a story by playwright Jenna “JB” Berenbaum. It follows the people of Taupe Town who are challenged by their young residents to look beyond their current colour preference and embrace all the possibilities. It’s a lesson in democracy full of original music and giant puppetry that we’ve all come to know from this annual summer tradition. You’re sure to find Sum at a park near you in the next few weeks.
