Fantastic Film Festival

Broadway Theatre

It’s lucky number 13 for the Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival. This is a celebration of the best independent films from here in Canada and right around the world. There are 50 films to choose from this year and you won’t want to miss some of the special events. Friday night is Drunken Cinema with a screening of The Lost Boys where you will play along with the film and maybe get a little tipsy along the way. Saskatchewan film Cold Wind Blowing will enjoy its premiere on Saturday night and there will be a Q&A after the screening with writer/director Dionne Copland and producer Louise Weard. Next Saturday will feature a morning cartoon party with a Halloween theme so dust off your costume and enjoy three full hours of cartoons. All access passes are around $175 and individual screenings are $7 – $13.

Boléro

It’s the perfect date night as the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra takes to the stage for Boléro!. The program, under the direction of Judith Yan, is a sensual one with works by Manuel de Falla featuring acclaimed Canadian pianist Angela Cheng. The concert will also include the North American premiere of Viento del oeste by Fernando Velázquez and the evening will climax with Maurice Ravel’s Boléro.  Ravel was called a “madman” when it premiered but the orchestra and Flamenco Borealis Music & Dance performers will be on hand to prove those reviews were wrong. This is a concert that will overwhelm the senses and add a little heat to the cold November night. Tickets are $39 – $85 and it will also be available online at ConcertStream.tv.

Frozen River

BackStage Stage – Remai Arts Centre 

A brand-new play for children is premiering on the BackStage Stage. Frozen River – nîkwatin sîpiy in Cree, is the story of two eleven-year-olds who were born under the same moon but in different parts of the world. The play, from Manitoba Theatre for Young People, happens in two time periods, first with the two children meeting in the forest and then flashing forward to present day where their descendants meet in Manitoba. They have to find a way to right the wrongs of the past. This show will tour across the province. Tickets are $16 – $21.

Community Day Movie

Who doesn’t like snuggling in for a movie with the family and what could be better than FREE?? Cineplex Theatres across Canada are celebrating Community Day by offering select free screenings and discounted snacks to help raise money for BGC Canada (formerly Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada). $1 from every concession order will go to the charity. Saturday morning you can choose from Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and The Lost City.

Nutcracker

It’s no secret the holiday season is approaching and for many that means a little Tchaikovsky. Ballet Jörgen is back with its performance of The Nutcracker. This touring production has all the magic you’ve come to expect with beautiful sets, familiar melodies and incredible dancers. The company has set its story with Klara in the midst of a Canadian winter with lumberjacks, Mounties, and creatures of the woods. Tickets are going fast and run from $32 – $105.
