The final production in Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre’s 25th Anniversary season is the premiere of a new play by Circle of Voices alum, playwright April Rogers. Powwow: A Theatrical Production is the story of three cousins attending the annual Powwow only to find everything has changed. The committee has sold out to a big corporation and turned the event into a competition. The cousins and the emcee must fight to save the celebration. Tickets are $5 – $40.

It’s a music and life partnership that’s created an incredible sound… The North Sound. Forrest Eaglespeaker and Nevada Freistadt blend heartfelt songwriting with beautiful melodies and have garnered attention from the Saskatchewan Country Music Association with multiple nominations as well as winning a couple of SaskMusic awards. They are launching What it Takes, their new album right here at home before hitting the road. Tickets are $28 – $38.

Drama students never take a day off! The semester may be wrapping up but the University of Saskatchewan Drama Students’ Association is hitting the stage for its One Acts Festival. There will be two original one act plays by the students and an improv set. It’s a chance to see these emerging artists and tickets start at $5.

The celebration of David Cronenberg continues at The Broadway Theatre with a screening of Videodrome. The science fiction horror, starring a young James Woods, has been called one of his most original and provocative works. It follows Max Renn who’s looking for edgy new material for his cable station when he stumbles on a hyperviolent torture show. This one is not for the faint of heart. Tickets are $12.

Canadian trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler left his mark on the jazz world with his style and sense of adventure. The Saskatoon Jazz Orchestra closes out its season with a tribute to the legend featuring one of our country’s best, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen. This is a chance to see some of Wheeler’s most iconic works. Tickets are $20 – $35.

Sum Theatre is back with its annual Theatre in the Park. Breathe is a musical journey that follows a fish seeking refuge on an island inhabited by a reclusive, fire breathing dragon. The two must adapt to survive. It’s a story about finding your place in the world and achieving things beyond your wildest imagination. Breathe opens in Saskatoon before heading out on tour to neighbourhood parks in Regina and area and Northern Saskatchewan. It’s free for everyone to attend.

Garrett Mason comes from a long line of bluesmen, his father Dutch Mason is a member of the Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame. The festival that celebrates visual art, music, story, meditation and more is back in the city for another year. The Contemplative Arts Festival of Saskatoon invites us to open our mind, body, and spirit to all the possibilities of creative expression. Highlights this year include storytelling by Lyndon J Linklater, who’s also doing a Birchbark crafting workshop, performances by artists like Chris Lindgren, Belinda Betker, and so much more. There will be workshops in a variety of mediums, opportunities to meditate, and take some time to do the labyrinth walk.
