“Christmas is an emotional time for people, it has the power to bring you back to your roots.”

Eileen Laverty loves Christmas music. The folk singer/songwriter is one of the guest artists for the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra’s 12 Days of Christmas show December 8 at TCU Place.  She’s excited to be returning to perform with the SSO during the holidays. “Music has a way of affecting you this time of year, it touches your soul, it brings up feelings of nostalgia and gratitude.”

Along with Laverty, the orchestra will be joined by vocalist Garry Gable, narrating ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas as well as performing holiday favourites. Saskatoon’s singing plumber,

Trevor Wingerter will be lending his voice to a special rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas featuring the symphony’s different instruments in call and answer fun that will delight the audience. The University Chorus and the Greystone singers will also be featured in a performance of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

The SSO’s executive director Mark Turner says this show is designed to bring back that fireside feeling of the old Bing Crosby television specials.

“This is going to be a charming show,” says Turner. “The performance will be full of surprises and put you in the mood of the festive season.” In an effort to appeal to new audience, the symphony is highlighting its TD 25 Below initiative where anyone 25 years old and under can get tickets for $25 in any section of the theatre the night of the show.

For Laverty, this performance is a kickoff to her own holiday preparations. She’s even written a brand-new tune for the show.

“The song is meant to be a reminder of how we can get caught up in being so busy around this time of year.” She explains, “Music can serve as a reminder that we need to slow down and remember to find the joy in life.”
