Broadway District

It’s considered one of the top 10 Fringe Festivals in North America and this year the Nutrien Fringe Theatre Festival celebrates 30 years of fly by the seat of your pants theatre. Broadway Avenue is swarming with actors, vendors and street performers and there’s no better way to experiment with live theatre.

The festival will see a few changes this year with the addition of a new busking circle right behind Victoria School in the park so you can grab a bite and lounge with the family.  Tickets for the shows are $15. The schedule is huge and I encourage you to experiment but I’ve made a few picks to help simplify your plans.

Family Fun

The Alice Principle

A mash up of some of your favourite fairy tales is in store with The Alice Principle by Saskatoon’s Shadow Players. This Kids Fringe show follows a grown up Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood and Alice as they work to defeat the evil Magic Mirror. This adventure includes audience participation and even the introduction of an 8th dwarf. The show is at Kinsmen/Cosmo Hall Thursday and Friday afternoon.

Inspirational Journey

I, Frida

It’s a story that many newcomers to Canada know intimately. Yulissa Campos draws on personal experience for her one-woman show I, Frida. It follows 14 year-old Frida as she arrives in Saskatchewan with her family as political refugees from Venezuela. As she navigates her new home and all the complications being a newcomer triggers, Frida finds inspiration and guidance from the spirit of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. You’ll find this show at Grace Westminster Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

Romance in the Dance

Into the Tango

Get ready to be swept up in the passionate world of dance with Montreal’s Pointe Tango. Into The Tango is an unusual and mesmerizing performance blending music, poetry, classical ballet and Argentine Tango. This show has gotten rave reviews on the Fringe circuit this year and it’s a must see for dance fans. Shows are at the Broadway Theatre Thursday night and Saturday afternoon.

 

Saskatoon Ex         Now – Sun.

Prairieland Park

Tasty treats, hot music, rides and fun for the whole family await you at the Saskatoon Exhibition. The Ex is in full swing on the grandstand with performances by The Glorious Sons, Chad Brownlee and Trooper. Family shows on the ground include Super Dogs, The Hockey Circus Show, Paw Patrol and Bob The Builder Live. Admission into the fairgrounds is $10 – $16 and the rides will run you between $49 – $65 for a wristband or super pass.

Boston Pizza – Saskatoon

She’s been getting a ton of buzz on the Canadian country music scene lately. Amy Nelson took the stage most recently at Country Thunder and now you have a chance to see this powerhouse live in a more intimate setting. Nelson will be sharing her music with two shows at Boston Pizza locations in Saskatoon. The first is Tuesday at the Stonebridge location then Nelson heads over to the Blairmore location for a show Wednesday. The performance is 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. and they are both free of charge.

Folkfest 2019          Aug. 15 – 17

Various Venues

Take a trip around the world without ever leaving home. Folkfest 2019 is getting geared up for another year and you won’t want to miss all the entertainment, food and drink the 17 pavilions have in store. This is the 40th year for Saskatoon’s premiere cultural celebration and organizers are inviting you to rediscover memories as you visit each pavilion. Along with the tried and true favourites like the Ukrainian Karpaty, Scottish and German pavilions, you can expand your horizons and taste the chorma chicken of Bangladesh, Passports are $15 and include admission and transportation between locations on the Folkfest buses. You’ll want to bring cash along so you can taste, sip and find that perfect souvenir.
