Nutrien Fringe Theatre Festival / Facebook

Fringe Festival            Now – Aug. 10

Broadway District

It’s considered one of the top 10 Fringe Festivals in North America and this year the Nutrien Fringe Theatre Festival celebrates 30 years of fly by the seat of your pants theatre. Broadway Avenue will be taken over for the next week and a half by troupes from all over the world.

The festival will see a few changes this year with the addition of a new busking circle right behind Victoria School in the park so you can lounge with the family. This weekend is Family Fringe Days with dance performances, bouncy castles and other activities for the kids to take in between shows. Tickets for the shows are $15. The schedule is huge and I encourage you to experiment but I’ve made a few picks to help simplify your plans.

For the Kids

Fringe favourite Erik De Waal is back with puppetry, comedy and magic in his tale of talking jungle animals in African Folktales with Erik De Waal. This is a celebration of South African folktales that has won over kids from all around the globe. De Waal is a regular at Saskatoon’s Fringe and there’s a reason why he keeps coming back.

Date Night

The Watch / Little Big Theatre

A comedy for couples awaits in The Watch. (Little Big Theatre)

Saskatoon’s Little Big Theatre has a show for adults that sounds like a lot of fun. The Watch is the story of how the gift of a smart-watch puts pressure on Sam and Jordan as they try to navigate their romantic relationship. It’s a story of self-care, adoption and the battle against a common enemy… The Robinsons.

Naughty by Nature

Something in the Water / Scantily Glad Theatre

S.E. Grummett is back with a comedy about self-discovery and monster movies. (Scantily Glad Theatre)

Take a deep dive into the world of comic books, monster movies and growing up “normal” in a world where you don’t quite fit in. Something in the Water is a story from the mind of S.E. Grummett and based on their real-life experiences coming out as genderqueer. This is a comedy that uses puppetry, video projection and physical comedy to tell the tale.
