The Western Canadian Music Awards are making its debut in Saskatoon. Along with the awards show comes a three day music festival featuring some of Western Canada’s best musicians. This year is a big one for hometown heroes Wide Mouth Mason. The group shot to stardom in the mid-90s and toured the world. The group is being inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame this weekend and to celebrate two of the founding members Shaun Verrault and Safwan Javed will take to the stage at the Broadway Theatre for a special performance. Other venues throughout the city will be filled with performances all weekend by acts like the Dump Babes from Saskatchewan, Boogey The Beat out of Manitoba, and The Naysayers from Yukon. With more than 50 acts to choose from, there’s a concert for every musical taste. Festival wristbands are $20.

Native Gardens

Persephone Theatre opens its 50th Anniversary season with a tale of neighbours. Native Gardens is a comedy that follows two sets of neighbours with very different ideas of what their backyards are for. Pablo and Tania have just moved into their home and want their yard seeded back to native plants whereas Frank and Virginia next door have a carefully manicured  flower beds. The tension leads to hose fights, midnight spy missions and a squabble or two over the fence. Tickets are $43 – $60.

You know this comic from movies, TV, and his comedy specials on Netflix. Gabriel Iglesias is bringing his Don’t Worry Be Fluffy tour to Saskatoon with a collection of stories about his life, sound effects, and voice parodies that will entertain fans of all ages. Tickets are $89 – $150.

They started out as a high school band in the early 70s and they haven’t really stopped. Rocky Lakner and Don Millikin have been writing songs and jamming all these years and with the addition of Kelly Read they formed Crooked Creek. The band offers incredible guitar licks and beautiful harmonies with a bluegrassy feel. Tickets are $25 – $35. Saturday roots act Diyet & the Love Soliders will perform. Those tickets are $28 – $38.

Nuit Blanche 2024

It’s a festival full of light, experimentation and art in all shapes and forms. Nuit Blanche is back for its 10th year of pop art this weekend. Friday it’s Nuit Blanche Eve featuring performances and displays on the University of Saskatchewan Campus. Saturday night the action spreads to other locations all over the downtown and Broadway district. There will be film, outdoor light displays, sculpture, dance, poetry and so much more. It’s such a wide ranging list of performances, you should head to the website to check out the artists and map out your journey.

So much of his music is woven into the fabric of the Canadian music scene. The East Coast musician has spent four decades grinding away at his craft and given us songs like Through & Through & Through, Fashionable People, and Nowhere With You. He’s also helped fellow musicians Mo Kenney, Sarah Slean, and David Myles create their own hit songs. Now the singer-songwriter is out on the road supporting his latest album with the One Real Reveal on Wheels Tour. Tickets are $42.
