Gillian Sings Joni

Friday

She’s one of the hardest working musicians in our city. Gillian Snider performs with several groups but the show that packs the place is always her tribute to Joni Mitchell. Gillian Sings Joni will include Mitchell’s most loved tunes as well as the favourite jazz standards that she recorded. Tickets are $28 – $38. The Bassment will also host Solstice (June 29) and then the venue switches over into its Strictly Jazz series as part of the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. La Foca Funk4

Saturday – July 14

Various Venues

We’ve got a special visitor in Saskatoon… Trumpet player Lucas Clementi is here all the way from Argentina. Clementi is a member of La Foca Funk4. This show is jazz, funk and blues all rolled into one and many songs you’ll know and love with a twist. Discovered by locals on vacation, Clementi was persuaded to come to our fair city to play local clubs for a month. For a few gigs, he’ll be joined by guest artist Meliza Blanco, also from South American to share their culture and talent with us. Here’s a list of places to see the show over the next couple of weeks.

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan

Tuesday – Aug. 25

SOTS Site (next  to Wonderhub)

This season is  a mix of old and new down on the riverbank. The mainstage kicks off with Shakespeare’s Hamlet (July 2 – Aug. 25) but with a roaring 20s twist. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark as the gin flows and Hamlet has to unravel his father’s death and his uncle’s rise to power. The season is also filled with productions that were inspired by the Bard like Done/Undone (July 11 – Aug. 24), a story that takes on the problematic aspects of his work like racism, sexism and classism. It’s an analysis on what all the fuss is about when it comes to Shakespeare. Rounding out the season is Juliet: A Revenge Comedy (Aug. 6 – 18). This story pursues an alternate story, one where Juliet refuses to die and instead recruits a team of Shakespeare’s famous ladies to find out why they were forced into their own demise. Tickets are $30 – $50 for Hamlet and Done/Undone, Pay-what-you-can for Juliet: A Revenge Comedy.
