If this winter weather has you singing the blues, you’re in good company. The 2024 Saskatoon Blues Festival is on and you have one last weekend to catch the shows. Friday night the Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer will sharing the stage with John Primer at The Broadway Theatre. Saturday, BC Read will open the show for Jimmy and the Sleepers and the Russell Jackson Band. If you’re feeling inspired, Saturday there will be a free bass workshop with Russell Jackson and Bud’s will be hosting free jams for all musicians on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are free – $64 depending on the event.

You still have a few chances left this weekend to see Ppl r Ppl Productions’ Spring Awakening. This show about morality, sexuality and rock and roll follows late 19th Century teens as they navigate self-discovery, anxiety and rebellion. It was a hit on Broadway and won 8 Tony Awards. The soundtrack is spectacular and the story is incredibly moving. Tickets are going fast and run $30 – 40.

Kinan Azmeh with the SSO

The worlds of classical music and improvisation collide in the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra’s performance this weekend. Syrian-born clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh will join the SSO under the direction of conductor Cosette Justo Valdés in a performance of his Suite for Improviser and Orchestra. This is a piece has taken Azmeh around the world performing it with orchestras more than 200 times. The piece pays tribute to several places he’s called home and he says once he’s performed it in Saskatoon, our city will become part of his home too. Tickets are $45 – $93.

Folk and bluegrass fans are going to want to head to The Bassment this weekend for this show. Five-time Juno Nominee, Canadian Folk Music Award winner Andrew Collins and his trio are back with a brand-new album The Rule of Three. Check them out Sunday night. Tickets are $27 – $37.
