SSO Gears Up for Halloween with Two Spooky Spectacles
When it comes to Halloween, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more enthusiastic family than the Unverrichts. The candy, the costumes, the curated playlists; Brian Unverricht and his daughter Stephanie have always celebrated the spooky season in style.
“Halloween is always a huge event at our house,” says Brian. “Stephanie would always go to a lot of trouble to figure out a costume. One of my favourites was in Grade 9. She wore all black and cut duct tape in the shape of keys so she could go as her bassoon. She looked spectacular!”
While an unconventional choice for some, a bassoon costume made complete sense to this pair of classical musicians. This year, they are sharing their passion as part of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra’s double bill of October performances.
Brian will conduct the SSO’s presentation of Nosferatu October 20 – 23 touring to Lloydminster, North Battleford, Saskatoon and Melfort. This is the 100th anniversary of the infamous horror movie. The silent film is an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and the SSO will play the soundtrack to the screenings live.
“The music is thrilling,” says Brian. “The tone of the strings is rough and haunting, almost a screeching sound. It’s really spooky.”
Brian will then step away from the podium to play his trombone alongside Stephanie, principal bassoonist, and the rest of the orchestra in Halloween Bash October 29 at TCU Place. The performance will include hits like Monster Mash, Thriller, and Night on Bald Mountain. Pieces that have always gotten the Unverrichts into the spirit of the season.
“My dad and I have always made playlists for the trick or treaters,” says Stephanie. “Music definitely gets you in the mood and it will at this concert.”
Brian says these performances are a wonderful prelude to Halloween.
“Both concerts will be a great evening of music with friends and family,” he says. “I enjoy myself everyday but there’s just a little extra magic in the lead up to Halloween. Let the SSO give you that thrill.”
