It’s performance that pushes the boundaries and you can see it live online just ahead of International Jazz Day Friday. FYEAR is an ensemble that fuses jazz improvisation, spoken word and electronic music to the limit. This performance is being presented by the National Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts in partnership with the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. It’s the kind of ground-breaking performance that would be making headlines on the festival circuit. The live stream is free. SK Theatre Design Festival

It’s been a tough year for many in our local theatre community now it’s time for a celebration of the talent that those behind the scenes. The SK Theatre Design Festival was created to celebrate those who make live theatre come alive with light, sound, props, sets and costumes. Plans have had to shift a bit given the current COVID-19 regulations and the events will be held exclusively online. You can check out the Design challenges like the “Quicksand” set design, “Killer Dress” costume and “Magic Knife” prop design challenges on the website. There will also be designer talks and online workshops some of the works will be on display in the windows at Brainsport and Persephone Theatre. Music fans will delight in the talents of local musicians this weekend. The Bassment is presenting In Tune, two days jam packed with performances all in the comfort of your own home. The lineup will include The Gerard Weber Group, Jay and Jo and the Randy Woods Band. The event is free but if you see fit, the Saskatoon Jazz Society is raising money via Canada Helps.

Jeffery Straker hasn’t let this past year slow him down. He’s been determined to put some piano into our pandemic and has come to us live bringing joyful music to us all. Straker’s been busy putting the finishing touches on his latest album Just Before Sunrise and, because live touring isn’t possible, he’s releasing it with a virtual tour. Backed by a full band Straker will entertain you and the ticket price is in a pick-what-you-pay format. Tuesday May 11, Straker’s show will be presented by the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
