Persephone opens its season with a world premiere. Rachel Mutombo’s Wake brings Miriam Kabongo home to the Prairies following the death of her father. What awaits is grief, family tension, old wounds and secrets that aren’t quite willing to remain secrets. The play was originally commissioned by Persephone through its IBPOC New Play Development program and now makes its world premiere in Saskatoon in a co-production with Western Canada Theatre. It’s a production that’s filled with heart, laughter, and plenty of family drama. Tickets are $59 – $72.

Bahamas (Afie Jurvanen) is one of my personal favourites when it comes to feel-good music and he’s keeping it super chill as he brings the Industrial Sport & Sound tour to Saskatoon. The Canadian musician is on the road in support of his latest work My Second Last Album. Bahamas has always been difficult to neatly categorize — a little folk, a little indie, a little country and plenty of laid-back charm. There’s no word on whether the album title rings true but I do know that you should see this Juno Award winner live when you have the chance. Alberta singer songwriter Mariel Buckley will be the opening act. Tickets are $52 – $87

Juno Award-winning clarinetist Virginia MacDonald is bringing the smooth sounds of her quartet to The Bassment. It’s all in celebration of the release of  In Search Of… her debut album. Tickets are $30 – $40.

Saskatoon International Burlesque Festival

Bring on the feathers! The Saskatoon International Burlesque Festival returns with performers from Canada and beyond for two completely different nights. Friday leans toward the wild side with Frisky Friday, a neo-burlesque showcase hosted by Winnipeg’s DD Brassiere and featuring international headliners Red Tongued Raven of Toronto and Chanelle de Mai of Paris. Saturday things get really racy with performers like Bella Rose, Hotsy Flashy, and Viktoria Court. Tickets are $40 – $60 or a weekend pass for $70.

Saskatoon audiences know this voice very well. Paulina Salisbury is an award-winning local performer who’s heading out on tour with pianists Karen Reynaud and Esther Zhu. Salisbury will perform classical voice and musical theatre favourites in Regina, Yorkton, and Rosetown as well as Boissevain, MB. This tour is supported by the Saskatchcewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association. Tickets are free.

SaskTel Centre

You know what’s coming…At some point thousands of people inside SaskTel Centre are going to sing Don’t Stop Believin’ at the top of their lungs and you are going to want to join in. Journey has been creating rock anthems like Any Way You Want It, Girl Can’t Help It, and After The Fall for over 50 years and now the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers are saying goodbye with the Final Frontier Tour, part of the band’s farewell run. Tickets are $60 – $176.

Capitol Music Club

Celebrated Canadian rockers Default are out on the road celebrating a quarter century since its chart-topping album The Fallout swept the country. The Juno Award-winners had hits like Wasting My Time, Deny, and Slow Me Down on the top of the charts in the early 2000s. Frontman Dallas Smith went on to a huge solo career in country music. They’re excited to get back on stage together and relive the magic with you. Tickets are $75.

The Glass Menagerie

What happens when a group of talented thespians love an iconic play but it hasn’t been staged in Saskatoon since the 70s? They band together and produce it themselves. Broken Glass Collective has been working for a few years on bringing Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie to the stage. The play is a hauntingly beautiful portrait of a family caught between the life they have and the life they desperately wish for. Set in the late 1930s, on the brink of a changing world, it centres on the Wingfield family during the Great Depression as Amanda, the matriarch clings to memories of her youth and worries about the future of her children. Tickets are pay-what-you-can $15 – $75.

The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra continues its Silence is Golden tradition with the premiere of Michael Bridge’s performance of the 1923 film of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Using his digital accordion, Bridge creates an improvised soundtrack to score this legendary film. It’s magic right before your eyes. Tickets are $42 – $48.
