Powerhouse vocalists Finding Light in SSO finale

Grief, compassion, and a search for inner peace – the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra will close out its 95th season with a concert that will lead the audience on an emotional journey in Finding Light at Knox United Church.

It’s a fitting way to close the season.

“We begin with the haunting beauty of the Albinoni-Giazotto Adagio in G Minor, and then move to Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater,” says conductor Judith Yan. “Together, these works invite us into a world of reflection, tenderness, and emotional intensity. It’s a fitting way to close the season.”

It actually takes us through the stages of grief and brings us out on the other side.

Stabat Mater is one of the most celebrated sacred works ever composed. The medieval text reflects the suffering of Mary at the crucifixion of Christ. Alto Oli Guselle feels the music goes far beyond religious tradition, and speaks to the times we are living in.

“It’s a heavy piece and at first glance, it’s dark,” says Guselle. “But, it actually takes us through the stages of grief and brings us out on the other side with acceptance, beauty and light. It’s our job to pull that out and show the hope within.”

It’s amazing to sing with someone you’ve learned so much from.

Guselle is excited to share the guest artist credit in this performance with Kateryna Khartova and it’s the first time the two have collaborated. “She’s an amazing soprano,” says Guselle. “I’ve always looked up to her so it’s amazing to sing with someone you’ve learned so much from.”

There’s always a sense of light and love.

For both soloists, performing with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra carries special significance.

“This music never drops you into despair, there’s always a sense of light and love,” says Khartova. “In the modern world, with so much suffering happening across the world and in my home country, that message feels more important now than ever. To deliver it with my home orchestra, it’s a beautiful way to end the season.”

“I’m always struck anytime I get to be alongside our SSO. I’m such a huge fan of what they do,” says Guselle. “To be a part of this finale for an incredible season, I feel very honoured and blessed.”
