Sonia’s Soul : SSO builds custom concert for Reid
In a world of vocalists, few can say they’ve had an orchestral concert built around them but Sonia Reid has achieved this major milestone. The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra is celebrating of Reid and the music she grew up with in A Change Is Gonna Come.

“When I think about little me all those years ago and what she would say about this show, all that comes to mind is, ‘Look Mom!’,” says Reid. “I never dreamed this was possible. It’s the culmination of years of hard work and lots of support from my community.”
I wanted songs that just feel like home
Reid made her debut with the SSO in 2024’s YXE Divas. It was immediately clear there was magic in the air. The orchestra approached Reid about creating a performance just for her.
“I wanted songs that just feel like home,” Reid explains. “I grew up immersed in gospel and R&B. These songs are what I lovingly call the grit; you know they have passion, soulfulness, and conviction. You can’t deny their power.”
Sonia has a distinct and powerful presence on stage

Featuring songs from legends like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Aretha Franklin this concert is the result of months of collaboration with Reid, conductor Janna Sailor, and arranger Donovan Seidel.
“Sonia has a distinct and powerful presence on stage,” says Sailor. “An orchestra elevates an artist, highlights what they do tenfold. When we get to build something custom-made for a Saskatoon artist, it brings that artist to a whole other level. Other orchestras can easily program this show so they’re audiences can experience the magic of Sonia’s voice.”
There’s a point where I’m singing where my soul actually connects to the song
This concert is about the music that moves people. Reid says there’s nothing like the power of being backed by an orchestra.
“There’s a point where I’m singing where my soul actually connects to the song. I feel it deep within me,” says Reid. “I don’t know if the audience realizes this but it resonates, it goes deep. I can feel the connection between me, the musicians, and the audience. We are sharing in that joy together. It’s so exciting.”
