Wintertime is a sacred time for Indigenous communities, where knowledge about people and lived experience are traditionally shared. The Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples have a calendar full of events to celebrate Saskatchewan Indigenous Storytelling Month. From oral storytelling to dance performances, film screenings to artist workshops you can do it all. The events are free to the public.

Get ready to celebrate the season, and the mild temperatures, at WinterShines. The annual festival has a ton of fun for the whole family happening around the main site at Market Square. There will be kick sledding, wagon rides, snowshoeing, stargazing, face painting and visits from your favourite Disney characters. The annual ice carving challenge will leave you in awe. The soup challenges pits home cooks, culinary students and chefs against each other and the public decides whose soup reigns supreme. Embrace winter and have a little fun with the family. Most of the events are free.

The Boat

The Refinery
A new play by Saskatchewan’s Todd Devonshire is about to hit the stage and give us a glimpse into Canada’s forgotten past. The Boat is set in the 1960s and follows the story of two doctors set up in an off shore clinic on a boat 15 miles off the coast of Nova Scotia. It’s in international waters, free from Canadian laws, where women are allow the choice to end their pregnancy. Devonshire says with the reversal of Roe v. Wade south of the border, Canadians need to know how far our country has come. Tickets are $27 – $32.

The worlds of jazz and Middle Eastern music collide in this performance by Tunisia’s Mohamed Masmoudi. His works are known for rich melodies and texture. This performance is made possible through the collaboration of Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and the Saskatoon Jazz Society. Tickets are $38 – $48.
