SSP sets the stage & artists call the shots in Building Broadway

It’s like a choose your own adventure for musical theatre buffs. The Saskatoon Summer Players handed the reins over to its artists for Building Broadway – A Director’s & Choreographer’s Showcase. Local choreographers and directors submitted their ideas for what inspires them and then built a cast for this revue-style show. Mykaela Mennie jumped at the chance.

It brings me such joy.

“For me this is the ultimate creative space,” says Mennie. “When I’m helping choreograph a show, I have to fit within the director’s vision. With this show, we got to choose anything in the world of musical theatre, no matter how big the idea was. It brings me such joy.”

I was shocked when they said yes!

The SSP mid-season cabaret is a tradition in this town and this year’s show has something for everyone. Hits from Chicago, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Come From Away are numbers you’re sure to recognize. There are also a few surprises folded into the program like Vampire Weekend, a sketch from an old-time radio play called The Thrilling Adventure Hour. That one was Alan Neiman’s idea.

“I was shocked when they said yes,” says Neiman who’s making his directorial debut. “It’s about a high-society couple in the 50s who are supernatural investigators and also heavy drinkers. It’s hilarious.”

It’s an adventure for the cast and the audience.

Actor Pearl Barnes performs in several of the numbers and says it’s fun to keep switching gears.

“We’re rehearsing every day and every day is something new,” says Barnes. “I love the variety show. It’s so much fun to see one thing on stage and then the next piece is something completely different. It’s an adventure for the cast and the audience.”

SSP executive director Kenn McLeod says this show is all about building community.

Building Broadway reminds us that SSP is not only a producing organization, but a creative home,” says McLeod. “One where participation matters, passion is encouraged, and our community continues to grow by making theatre together.”
