Emrys Jones Theatre – U of S Campus

The University of Saskatchewan’s Greystone Theatre has a production of award-winning Irish playwright Brian Friel set to hit the stage. Translations is a historical drama set in 1883 it tells the tale of a group of students at a hedge school that are tasked with mapping out the land, recording the local Gaelic names and replacing them with English ones. The collision of cultures brings major consequences. Tickets are $20 – $25.

The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra has a Valentine’s Day concert that will have you swooning. Piano virtuoso Angela Cheng joins conductor Judith Yan to perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor. The entire program is filled with recognizable and romantic melodies like Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. Tickets are $50 – $103. 25th Street Theatre is premiering a brand-new Canadian play that delves into some pretty timely topics. Rachel Aberle’s The Watch List is a story of parents eager for the visit of their son and his new girlfriend. They’re all set for a birthday celebration when revelations come to light that could tear the family apart. This is a show that deals with social politics, generational divides, and consent. Get ready to celebrate the season, and the mild temperatures, at WinterShines. The annual festival has a ton of fun for the whole family happening around the main site at Market Square. There will be kick sledding, wagon rides, snowshoeing, stargazing, face painting and visits from your favourite Disney characters. The annual ice carving challenge will leave you in awe. The soup challenges pits home cooks, culinary students and chefs against each other and the public decides whose soup reigns supreme. Let’s be honest, we’re all looking for something to do with the little ones during the Family Day long weekend. The Helpful Prince is a mashup of classic fairy tales, clever heroes, and playful puppets. You’ll be amazed at the world that unfolds from this storybook with a whole cast of tabletop puppets. This show is geared for the little ones but honestly, anytime I’ve gone with my kids, I’ve laughed and played along as well.  Tickets are $12 – $17.

Cantate Pour Legumes

La Troupe du Jour’s celebrating its 40th anniversary with a lyrical, musical play by Saskatoon’s own Madeleine Blais-Dahlem hitting the stage this week. Cantate Pour Légumes follows four seniors or “vegetables” as they cheekily call themselves who are bored at the seniors’ home and decide to go on a pilgrimage. It’s a reflection on life, aging, memory, and freedom. The show will be in French with English surtitles and  artist talkbacks after the shows are scheduled for Sunday and Feb. 14th. Tickets are $15 – $30, children 6 and under are $8.

The Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples have a calendar full of events to celebrate Saskatchewan Indigenous Storytelling Month. From oral storytelling to dance performances, film screenings to artist workshops you can do it all. The events are free to the public.
