The Broadway Theatre

One of Canada’s most well-known Celtic fiddlers is coming to town to kick off the holidays. Ashley MacIsaac is having a Cape Breton Christmas party full of songs that will have your toes tapping all night. The Juno Award-winning artist just released Christmas Across the Atlantic and it’s a collection of modern and classic holiday songs. Saskatchewan, Métis fiddler Joseph Desjarlais will open the show. Tickets are $50.

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)

The Refinery

A new theatre company in town Fatal Fem Theatre is making its debut on the Live Five Independent Theatre stage with Ann-Marie MacDonald’s Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet). It’s a feminist comedy that follows Constance Ledbelly, a young English lit professor, on a journey of self-discovery as she dives deep into Shakespeare’s work. It’s a bit like fan fiction as Constance falls down the rabbit hole into the worlds of Othello and Romeo and Juliet and tries to save Desdemona and Juliet from their tragic fate. Tickets are $27 – $32.

Festival of Trees

Friday – Nov. 29

Western Development Museum

It’s a sign the holiday season has arrived when the Western Development Museum is filled with trees, lights, and garland. The Festival of Trees is back for its 40th year and it’s the perfect place to get inspiration for decorating your own home. Friday and Saturday this week will feature a special holiday market full of gift ideas from local crafters and artists. Sunday it’s the royal pajama party where you are invited to wear your comfies and play with Olaf, Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff from Disney’s Frozen. Monday and Tuesday the festival is hosting its annual father/daughter gala, and next Saturday Nov. 29th is brunch with Santa. You need to buy separate tickets for these events and they start at $48. General festival tickets are $10 – $18 and a family pass is available for around $43.

Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival

It’s a celebration of international and local movies that are causing a stir on the film festival circuit. The 16th annual Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival is back with every genre of cinema you can think of. Friday will feature the Saskatchewan premiere of Klee which was shot right here and it’s gothic, horror twist as an alien in the form of an Indigenous man infiltrates a community determined to terminate a family of colonizers. The premiere will be special as several members of the cast and crew will be at the screening. Saturday is a 50th Anniversary screening of Monty Python & The Holy Grail. Tuesday it’s A Night with Toxie & Lloyd with a double bill of The Toxic Avenger (1984) and Mr. Melvin (2025) and a Q&A session with the man who directed both films Lloyd Kaufman. This is just a taste of the adventures that await you at this year’s festival. Tickets start at $10, an all access badge is $195.

Secrets of the Whales

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron and National Geographic Explorer and Photographer Brian Skerry, the Disney+ series Secrets of the Whales has been adapted into a live in concert experience. The SSO and narrator University of Saskatchewan President Peter Stoicheff,  will provide the soundtrack to a journey into the lives of whales. This will be an epic journey into the deep and a look at Earth’s most majestic creatures. Tickets are $54 – $123.

Capitol Music Club

With a powerful voice and a blend of indie/soul music, Juno Award winning Indigenous artist Aysanabee  is out on the road for The Way We’re Born tour. This is his first as a headliner and it’s in support of his sophomore album Edge Of The Earth. Aysanabee is also celebrating local artists at each stop. The Saskatoon show will feature hometown favourite Lancelot Knight and Poundmaker Cree Nation artist LOV. Tickets are $35.

Award-winning Canadian country music stars James Barker Band is coming to town this weekend. Over the past decade the band has gone from dive bars to headlining festivals all over North America and Europe. The band has just released its latest EP Ahead of Our Time and is out on the Buckle Up Tour to give you a listen. Tickets are $68 – $73.

Christmas must be on its way because the BHP Enchanted Forest is back to light up the Forestry Farm Park. It’s a tradition in our house to kick off the holiday season with some hot chocolate, carols and a drive through the park. Make sure you check out all the forest additions, my 10 year-old knows them by heart and is always excited to see the new lights. Tickets are $10 per person or $35 per car.
