Iago Speaks

Saturday

Emrys Jones Theatre

A locally written play is headed to the Edinburg Fringe Festival this summer. Daniel Macdonald’s Iago Speaks was a hit at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival when it premiered in 2022 and later in 2024 as part of Shakespeare in the Ruins in Winnipeg. The play picks up where Shakespeare’s Othello ends with the villain Iago in jail. His vow of silence is challenged by his bumbling jailor who’s ramblings may be key to getting the real story out of his prisoner. It’s a big deal to be invited to Edinburg and now this all-Saskatchewan team, Rumpus Studio, is raising money to get there. A special fundraising performance of the show will be held at Emrys Jones Theatre on the UofS campus. Tickets are $40 – $60.

For the more classically inclined there’s the Bard’s The Tragedy of Richard II (opening July 24) with a story about the unravelling of a king who struggles to hold his position amid political unrest. This is the first time this play will hit the SOTS stage. Tickets are $33 – $50.
