SK Indigenous comics set to conquer with North American Tour
Forget about Saturday Night Live and The Kids in the Hall. Move over Second City… A team of Saskatchewan comedians is about to give you a run for your money! Red, White & You! is a comedy tour that blends the best of stand-up and sketch comedy into an unforgettable and irreverent performance.
“We thought it would be awesome to create a variety hour that uses both our sketch and stand-up skills. I basically wanted to show us off to a wider audience.”
The show is the latest in a string of successful comedy projects by well-known Saskatoon comedians Dakota Ray Hebert, Dylan Jay Williamson, Danny Knight and Ryan Moccasin. Hebert has been making waves in the film and television as well as the stage. In just a few years, she’s added Just For Laughs Comedy Festival, Comedy Night with Rick Mercer, Shelved, and most recently, Marvel’s Echo to her resume. Williamson, Hebert’s husband is a main draw on the stand-up scene including Just for Laughs Northwest and Sirius XM’s The Comedy Crawl Album, and Moccasin and Knight are behind The Feather sketch series on APTN. The idea for a new tour came from an offer to perform at the Coachella Valley Brewing Comedy Festival. It grew into a variety hour that will make stops in Saskatoon, Regina, Calgary, and Edmonton before heading south of the border for shows in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Boston and New York. Saskatoon comedian Shawn Cuthand will join the team for the American leg of the tour.
“We thought it would be awesome to create a variety hour that uses both our sketch and stand-up skills. I basically wanted to show us off to a wider audience,” says Hebert. “It’s just a super fun way to shine a spotlight on Saskatchewan talent.”
“With comedy, you can disarm the audience with laughter.”
Moccasin is excited to share their perspective with new audiences.
“We joke a lot about being Indigenous and honestly in Canada, we have a lot of material to work with,” says Moccasin. “Race relations, the history of colonialism, there’s an advantage to having material in surplus. With comedy, you can disarm the audience with laughter.”
While some may see this tour as incredibly ambitious, Hebert says it’s capitalizing on recent successes to create their own opportunities.
“I want Red, White, and You! to show the world what we can do, to expand our fanbase,” Hebert explains. “We want to create a roadmap for other comedians to follow. It’s about creating career longevity doing something that brings us all joy.”
