Returning to her roots; Miller joins SSO for performance

“It was such a privilege to have teachers that gave me a love of music. They are my foundation, what gave me a start on my way to becoming a conductor.”

On the international stage Tania Miller is known as a master interpreter and musician with international acclaim but, she’ll always be a prairie girl at heart.

“I’ve always felt the humbleness of my roots,” says Miller. “I was always aware of the lack of experiences I had, of how much more I needed to know. I think that enormous journey defined how hard I work and how much passion I put into growing as a conductor.”

Miller grew up in Foam Lake studying piano and performing in the marching band. She studied piano performance and music education at the University of Saskatchewan, taught music in Outlook. It wasn’t until she attended the University of Calgary’s summer conducting program that she was encouraged to pursue conducting professionally by the University of Michigan’s Robert Reynolds. The rest is history. At only 33, Miller became the first female music director of a major Canadian orchestra in Victoria. From Seattle to South Korea, Miller has taken to the podium all over the world. The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra is proud to welcome her back for Tania Miller and Jane Coop at TCU Place.

“We love bringing Tania home whenever we can. The last time she was here, she conducted one of the most inspiring concerts the SSO has ever performed,” says CEO Mark Turner. “She lives and breathes music both on the personally and on the podium.”

The spring concert will feature Tchaikovsky’s iconic Symphony No 5, Cree composer Andrew Balfour’s Pyotr’s Dream a piece inspired by Tchaikovsky, and a performance by one of Canada’s most distinguished pianists Jane Coop with Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24.

Miller is excited about leading the SSO in this performance and knows her role is to bring the best out in all the musicians on the stage.

“I like to think of making music as a constant flow of water.” Miller explains, “As a conductor, my job is to know when to put my hands in and help it change direction or to leave it and let the beauty wash over the audience.”
