The Sunset Kids signal Palmer’s musical evolution

Guitar player, music producer, songwriter or even a former Canadian Idol contestant, Josh Palmer isn’t worried about how you know him, he just wants you to hear what he’s been up to lately. ” I’m flattered when people come up to me and say they enjoyed any performance of mine,” says Palmer. “I was a kid on Canadian Idol and I’ve grown musically in every way since that show.”

Palmer’s latest project is a electro-folk duo called The Sunset Kids. He met his musical partner Alliya Elena four years ago and it was a musical match from the start. “From note one, Alliya sat down at the piano in my studio and started ripping a beautiful piece, we discovered a beautiful musical connection.” He jokes, “It was fate that a kid from Saskatoon and a girl from Russia met in the middle of Canada to form a band.”

Their music is a casual melt of folk melodies over electronic beats and synthesizers. Inspired by 80s New Wave acts like Joy Division and Peter Gabriel, The Sunset Kids combine live performance with video projections of visual art in their performance. “We want our shows to be friendly on the eyes and the ears. There’s tons of emotion in our music and I hope it’s intriguing for our audiences,” says Palmer.

The Sunset Kids have been all over North America with three Canadian tours and several gigs in Los Angeles. Their music video Brave was recently nominated for a 2016 Hollywood Music In Media Award. “It was really humbling because we were nominated beside international acts like Sting and Justin Timberlake,” says Palmer. The Sunset Kids are now working on a new album and they hope to release it later this year.

While they may have their sights set abroad, Palmer says he’s so excited to bring the band home to Saskatoon this summer. “The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz festival is world renowned. Huge acts play here every year,” He continues. “This show is a chance to get our music in front of a new audience and build our fan base. We feel very blessed to be doing this show.”

The Sunset Kids will hit the stage at The Capitol Music Club Saturday June 24th as the opening act for Winnipeg’s Begonia.
