Show tunes make couples swoon
When it comes to Valentine’s Day there’s always chocolate and roses but how about a little music to stoke the fire? The Saskatoon Summer Players are back to shoot Cupid’s arrow with Broadway In Love 3.
This show is a celebration of love in its many forms through the magic of musical theatre. 27 local performers will hit the stage with songs from shows like My Fair Lady, Wonderful Town and Avenue Q this weekend.
“I think that art and this music is a representation of life,” says the show’s director Rob Armstrong.”When we see these songs on stage, we naturally tie them back to experiences we’ve had in our own lives.”
“When we see these songs on stage, we naturally tie them back to experiences we’ve had in our own lives.”
This is the company’s third installment of the Broadway In Love series. The audience is invited to sit back and enjoy the low-key, cabaret atmosphere of The Bassment jazz club. Organizers say it’s the perfect set up to Valentine’s Day. “There’s a song called Fine Fine Line from Avenue Q and it gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it,” says Armstrong.”Hearing these Broadway love songs help us cope and deal with the high’s and lows of our own love lives.”
Armstrong has been involved with the show as a performer the last two years and says this year they are taking a new turn on the format. Although the songs are all from different shows, the company has woven a storyline through them for this performance. These are not all happy tunes and the show is centred around the journey that romance takes us on. explains Armstrong. “It’s important to explore all the sides of the emotion because the journey to love is not always a straight line.”
