Elly Thorn over the moon to open for Cook
It was a something Saskatoon singer/songwriter Elly Thorn had always visualized, she just didn’t know where or when. The answers came this Spring when an email arrived. Thorn had been selected to open for Juno Award winning world musician Jesse Cook Monday June 27th at the Sasktel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
“I was out showing houses when I got the email,” Thorn explains. “I kinda freaked out on this couple right during their house inspection. They were excited about the house, I was way more excited about the gig with the festival!” Thorn says that couple is going to be in the audience to celebrate with her Monday night.
Staying alive in the music business has been a juggling act for Thorn. She’s a mom of three young children as well as a successful real estate agent. Thorn says no matter what happened in her life, music was just one door she couldn’t close. “Music is who I am.” She continues,”I knew it was always going to be part of my life. I just didn’t know the path it would take.”
“I knew it (music) was always going to be part of my life. I just didn’t know the path it would take.”
Thorn says her sound is always evolving. She started off in the jazz realm and now has gently eased into the world of Pop/Country. Thorn hopes to release her first single to radio this Fall.
Thorn performs quite steadily around Saskatchewan but here’s no denying, opening for Jesse Cook could be her big break. “I’ve always pictured myself up on that stage with the river in the background,” she says. “I hope this opens more doors for me, lets people outside our province know my music.”
As for meeting her headliner Cook, Thorn says she’s excited by her husband John is the one that’s really going to be impressed. “John’s a huge fan and actually the one that introduced me to Jesse Cook in the first place,” she says. “This show and the jazz festival in general is going to do wonders for your soul. I hope to see everyone out there!”
