Joy of Vox brought back my childhood joy

Soprano Fun / Joy of Vox

A few of the amazing people I sing with and now proudly call friends.

A little over a year and a half ago I started a journey. I decided to jump ship from stable employment and go out on my own. Part of that adventure is this arts blog, and a growing career as a media consultant. Another big part is the elusive search for work/life balance, carve out a little something for me.

I have two kids and a husband with his own busy career. With my new found flexibility, I was determined to get back to something I really loved, singing. As a kid I was always in choir and even competed at local music festivals. I hadn’t performed for nearly 20 years and that is when Joy of Vox came into my life.

Headed up by former Streetnix member turned teacher, singer and composer, BJ Harris, this choir boasts 130 members and counting.  We sing everything from gospel to do-wop to pop tunes. These people come from all walks of life, retirees, young professionals, empty nesters and new parents. We range in ability some members have studied music, others simply sing in the shower.

Once a week we enter a world of beautiful harmonies sung at the top of your voice. Sometimes, when the group hits just the right chord, it feels like your heart jumps right out of your chest, music resonating through your entire body. In short, it’s magical.

Now, after a year of work, we are getting ready to end the season with our Spring Concert featuring Jeffery Straker. What a treat to have one of my favourite Saskatchewan artists on stage with us. I’m not going to lie, I always wanted to sing backup, now’s my chance!

New friends and new music, this choir has brought a spark back into my life. I’m singing in my car again and no, I don’t care if you see me. Heck! Join in!

We would love to see you at the show. Joy of Vox will be performing at Elim Church in Saskatoon Thursday June 2, 2016.
