Local gals making sure everything’s Rosie
When I need a musical pick-me-up lately, Saskatoon group Rosie & The Riveters have been there. The group’s up beat offering ‘Good Clean Fun!’ has brightened up a day or two. How can you frown with a song like A Million Little Things?
The Riveters sing in such a tight four-part harmony, its tough to understand that this started as a side project for each of them. ‘Good Clean Fun’ actually marks the first time the ladies have written songs together. ‘We went to Alexis’ family cabin at Wakaw Lake to write it,” explains Allyson Reigh. “It’s charming, folky and vintage inspired.”
“The inspiration happened naturally,” adds Alexis Normand “Someone brings a song, or part of one to the group and we decide if we like it.” Normand, a solo Francophone artist as well, says there are so many talents in the group; it wasn’t hard to find enough material and coax it into their own, unique sound.
The group has had a whirlwind Fall/Winter promoting ‘Good Clean Fun’. They sold out shows, appeared on national T.V. and radio, and reached #5 on the CBC Radio Top 20.
They also delighted many in the industry with their cupcake skills, delivering sweet treats wherever they went. “It’s a guerilla marketing technique that gave us a personal connection to others,” says Reigh. “We do a lot of fun things like that,” explains Normand. “When it’s the four of us we are bold and have no problem taking cupcakes around in our dresses. It just works for the Riveters.”
The cute 40’s inspired dresses, the bouncy songs and the cupcakes, could it all just be a bit too sweet? “It’s who we are as a band, we put smiles on all those faces, “ exclaims Reigh. Normand offers, “We’re doing it from a place of joy. This is what we enjoy and we want to share it.”
It’s that authenticity that delights crowds from coast to coast. The mixture of influences and even the dance moves impress a crowd. “We rap a Johnny Cash song with a 1940s influence that I think really surprises the crowd, but they are soon grooving along with us,” giggles Normand.
Now they are looking forward to Spring & Summer. April will see them on a string of dates in Western Canada including a pair right here in Saskatoon. Tickets are going fast for The Bassment shows (March 31st & April 1st). In July Rosie & The Riveters will take the stage at Winnipeg Folk Fest and the Gateway Music Festival. Let’s hope they bring cupcakes!
