It’s a love letter to family and the Italian-Canadian experience. Inspired by stories he heard growing up, Farren Timoteo created Made in Italy to tell the story of his father and grandfather’s relationship. The Wester Canada Theatre production follows a young man growing up in Canada as the child of Italian immigrants in the 1970s. It’s being billed as a mostly true story about a kid with the heart of Rocky Balboa and the moves (and hair) of John Travolta. You won’t want to miss this one-man show all about the love and family. Tickets are $43 – $60.

One For Sorrow, Two For Joy

It’s being called a whimsical carnival ride that’s wound up and then released to tell the story of a woman alone on the prairies of western Canada. One For Sorrow, Two For Joy is a thoughtful story of Willow Mae O’Reily trying to make a life for herself first as a nurse during WWI and later as a farmer in the foothills of Alberta. It features new music by Little Miss Higgins and performed through puppetry. Tickets are $35.

It’s a night of breathtaking music with award-winning musicians cellist David Liam Roberts and pianist Godwin Friesen. The pair make up the Prairie Sons, Friesen grew up in Edmonton and Saskatoon, while Roberts grew up in Winnipeg. The duo are performing at St. John’s Cathedral as part of the Prairie Debut concert series in partnership with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are $43 – $50.

Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre continues its 25th anniversary season with its annual Circle of Voices program production A Sea Most Cruel. Circle of Voices helps develop young aspiring artists and teaches them the ropes of theatre. A Sea Most Cruel tells the story of a young man handed over to a fisherman by his debt-stricken mother. He must learn to adapt to life on the high seas with an abusive captain as trouble approaches the ship. Tickets are free but you still have to register here to snag a seat to the performance.

 

Jelly Roll

It’s hard to deny the infectious “hick-hop” of American artist Jelly Roll. He’s turned the country music world upside down by blending hip-hop, country, and pop elements to create a sound that’s all his own and won a slew of awards doing it. Now, Jelly Roll is out on The Beautifully Broken Great Northern tour and it’s stopping in our city. Hear hit songs like Need a Favor and Save Me live. Special guests include Josh Ross, Savanna Dexter, and Brabo Gator. Tickets are $180 – $378 and there are only a handful left.

Susan Aglukark

She awakened an entire generation of Indigenous artists to express themselves and their culture through music. Susan Aglukark burst through the Canadian music scene in 1995 with her album This Child and hit songs like O Siem and Hina Na Ho. Now, 30 years later, the multiple Juno Award winner is celebrating the work with a Canadian tour. This concert will be special as Aglukark and her band will welcome local Indigenous drum groups to perform at each stop. Tickets are $50.
