Discovering the Amatis

Sunday

Convocation Hall

They’ve survived more than three hundred years, been passed from family to family, survived love and loss, and now Canada’s only collection of Amati String instruments are going to be showcased in a new concert series. Discovering the Amatis is a way for the University of Saskatchewan to share these rare musical treasures with the world. Curated by Dr. Veronique Mathieu, the David Kaplan Chair in Music at the UofS, this is a 4 concert series highlighting the two violins, viola and cello that were handcrafted by the Amati family. This quartet of instruments was collected by farmer Steve Kolbinson in the 1950s. The first performance will feature Edmonton viloinist Robert Uchida and cellist Rafael Hoekman. Tickets are $10 – $35.

Crash Test Dummies

Sept. 13

Broadway Theatre

It’s hard to believe it’s been three decades since the Crash Test Dummies burst onto the Canadian music scene with its hit Superman’s Song. The tune was quickly followed by Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, covered by Weird Al Yankovich and Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead which was featured on the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack. The band from Winnipeg wanted a way to mark the 30th anniversary so it’s headed out on the road around North America and Europe. This is a great bit of nostalgia and music we all loved back in the day. Tickets are $42.
