Local grindhouse flick aims to please

It’s scary, bloody and down right funny. Instruments of Evil is the latest production by Saskatoon’s Eye Catcher Films. The feature length film is made up of three separate 20 minute stories that all converge into one, kinda like a Tarantino flick.

The premise is police are investigating several musical instruments which seem to be involved in various bloody crimes. Local author and media personality Curtis Anderson took a turn as writer and filmmaker in one of the stories.

“I wrote my story while on vacation a few years ago,” he explains. “A couple is driving home on Christmas Eve, they run into car trouble and get abducted by an aspiring villain, but he’s not quite there yet.”

While this is a horror movie, it’s also meant to be campy and keep the audience laughing. “The is not meant to be taken seriously in any way,” says Anderson. “This is low budget and sometimes cheesy, but it’s meant to be that way. That’s the beauty of grindhouse film.”

To celebrate the film, cast and crew have a special red carpet premiere this Saturday night (July 23, 2016 / Showtime 9:00p.m.) at the Broadway Theatre. All ages are welcome. Guests are invited to come and walk the red carpet and have their picture taken. Once they settle in for the movie, Anderson hope they will fully participate. “This isn’t Schindler’s List. We want people to come in, have a drink, turn off their minds and have a laugh.” He continues, “We want them to recognize all the amazing local actors and settings we’ve used. If nothing else, we want them to marvel at the talent of filmmaker Huw Evans and his ability to build a set with only things he found at Value Village!”

There will be DVD copies of the film for sale at the premiere and the audience is invited to meet the cast and crew at an afterparty at Vangelis Tavern that night.
